Scope
Subcontracted for complete Engineering and Design of transmission lines, two 500kV substations ranging and three telecom repeater sites
Highlights
- First ever competitive P3 contract in Canadian history for a transmission infrastructure project.
- Project was awarded the 2020 International Edison Award.
- 2 x 500kV AC Substations with 4 telecom repeater stations.
- Longest 500kV AC transmission line in Canada, with 508km of line.
- Over $1.6 billion dollar EPC project
- Close collaboration with other Quanta companies (Dashiell for outdoor electrical design, Quanta Technology for system studies & RTDS testing, Valard for construction) saw us complete this extremely high profile project with no established client design standards for 500kV
- Redundant control system with several unique features:
- Main and backup bay controllers monitoring each other’s status and automatically negotiating which is active
- Automatic staggered pole opening in case of POW failure including counting uncontrolled (non-POW) openings to inform breaker maintenance
- Automatic retrieval and central storage of event records from all protection relays
Challenges
- Needed to design for high availability and security to prevent triggering heavy financial penalties included in the contract with the AESO
- Coordinating design, configurations & testing practices between APL and two different inter-connecting utilities.
- Designed a double circuit 500kV/240kV tubular steel structure to utilize an existing 240kV right-of-way for over 1km.
- A 240kV temporary bypass was also designed to minimize outage durations.
