Scope

Subcontracted for Substation Engineering & Design of a 240kV to 25kV point of delivery substation.

Highlights

  • Close collaboration with Cenovus Operations and other Engineering entities involved in the plant co-generation integration project.
  • A unique logic scheme was designed to provide islanded status to co-gen control units, for changing the control mode (isochronous/droop).
    • Statuses from numerous breakers and disconnect switches were used to determine whether the co-gen units were connected to the grid via the substation, which consisted of four 3-breaker diameters.
    • A fiber Mirrored Bits communication network was designed to consolidate the relevant statuses, which were distributed across several remote locations, into a central logic box, minimizing latency.
  • Delivery of a new 25kV switchgear building, fully fabricated by Phasor.

Challenges

  • Installed 14km of 25 kV power cable to tie in Cenovus Cogen into substation. Two redundant feeds.
  • Needed to figure out the power cabling through muskeg.
  • Needed to pull bi-directional drill through tight spacing in between the piping racks with only 2m.
